Hachette Livre International innovating for the environment

Hachette Livre International has undertaken to reduce the carbon footprint of schoolbooks by changing its procedure for sending samples to teachers in over 100 countries.
Until now, sample copies have been airfreighted* to teachers every year between March and May, thereby adding considerably to the overall carbon footprint of a schoolbook.
Hachette Livre International has therefore developed an innovative and secure website, http://monspecimen.com, and now, all over the world, teachers can quickly log in to the flexible, personalized site with a password and view all the new publications in the Hatier, Didier and Foucher ranges, together with a selection of downloadable educational resources. The markets involved in this pilot initiative are the DROM-COMs (French overseas regions, territories and communities), North Africa, Lebanon, French-speaking Africa, Belgium and Canada. Aside from being economically beneficial and useful for teachers, this new solution looks set to reduce distribution’s carbon footprint in this area by one-third over the next three years.
* Given the timeframes inherent in production, sample books have had be sent by airfreight so that teachers can select their books for the coming school year, whereas books for students can be sent by sea and will arrive in time for the new academic year. Aeroplanes cause more CO2 than any other mode of transport.

Since 2008, Hachette Livre has been involved in an ambitious programme to reduce the greenhouse gases generated by its activities in order to help combat climate change. In France, Hachette Livre was the first publisher to carry out a carbon audit, in 2009. Since then, the changes that have been made in the production, circulation and distribution stages have helped to cut the CO2-equivalent emissions from all our French publishing houses producing books by 17% in four years. In 2012, Hachette Livre introduced carbon labelling for books, so that readers can now find out the carbon footprint of each work they handle.
